Review: Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Canceling Headphones

As more and more people start listening to music during their busy day, noise canceling headphones are quickly becoming a must have accessory. Noise canceling headphones are headphones that actively reduce and fight outside interference and background noise to leave you with crisp, clear sounding audio and music that lets you forget about the world around you. The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint Active Noise Canceling Closed Back Headphones are one such set of headphones that claim to do the job at a reasonable price – combining high quality audio performance with an affordable price tag. As with any technology that becomes popular, the market is flooded with headphones that claim to do the job, but many are simply cheap imitations. The question is, are the Audio Technica QuietPoint Closed Back Headphones an imitation, or are they market leaders? Key Specs for Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Canceling Headphones RRP: $219.95 Year Of Release: 2009 Battery Powered? Yes – 2 AAA Wireless? No Noise Canceling? Yes Weight: 1.6 lbs Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Canceling Headphones: The Pros Noise Cancellation: As you would expect, one of the first things you need to consider in a pair of noise canceling headphones is their ability to cancel noise! The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B headphones claim to cut out around 90% of noise, and they live up to this claim. These are not top of the range noise canceling headphones, so you wouldn’t expect to see 100% noise cancellation. That said, they get very close. If you are using them in a particularly noisy environment, like on an airplane, you will find that they do not block out everything, but there are very few environments as consistently loud as an airplane! For use in the office, on a train, around the house or in the gym, the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B’s will do an admirable job. Price: There are noise canceling headphones available at almost any price range, starting from as low 30 dollars. The problem with these bottom market headphones is that they don’t actively reduce noise. Actively reducing noise isn’t as simple as shutting out sound, it involves identifying and countering sounds that shouldn’t be present in the earcup. Brands like Bose and Sennheiser have long been held as the best for active noise cancelling headphones, but for many the price tag is simply too high. Those people may find it much easier to justify the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint headphones. At less than 150 dollars, the QuietPoint headphones do manage to combine and affordable price tag with a functionality that will suit many, and although they don’t hit the heights of 100% noise cancellation, they get very close. Usability: The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint Headphones are unlike many active noise canceling headphones in that they can be used without battery power. Noise canceling headphones use batteries to power their electronics to actively reduce sound interference, but with many the headphones are useless without batteries. The ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint Headphones have the option to turn off noise cancellation, and even work as normal headphones without any batteries. This is a pleasant surprise, as many more expensive headphone sets do not function without battery power. Granted, the sound quality is noticeably poorer, but on a long journey that is far more preferable than no sound at all. Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Canceling Headphones: The Cons Sound Leakage: While the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint’s do an admirable job of keeping sound out, they don’t do a very good job of keeping it in! Unlike other noise canceling headphones, someone in the same room will be able to hear the music you are listening to in a quiet environment. This will not be an issue for many, as the point of sound canceling headphones is that they are ideal in noisy environments, but it does mean that the ATH-ANC7B’s are not great for use in some quiet places like a library. Audio Quality: While the noise cancellation on the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B’s does a very good job canceling noise, the audio quality it provides is not up to the standard of some more expensive headphones. The quality is by no means poor; it is a marked improvement on any standard pair of headphones. However, when compared to the big guns of the industry, the ATH-ANC7B’s doesn’t quite make the grade. This will be no issue to the wide majority of users, but if you want 300 dollar sound quality, you’re going to have to pay for it. Are the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B Active Noise Canceling Headphones Worth Buying? The Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint Active Noise Canceling Closed Back Headphones are a perfect middle of the road set of headphones for those looking for noticeable noise cancellation without paying several hundred dollars for the privilege. The noise cancellation works well in most situations, and the sound quality is more than passable. The ATH-ANC7B QuietPoints are comfortable and durable, and although not as sleek or modern in appearance as some others, noise canceling headphones should be bought on performance and not on aesthetics. If you are looking for the top range noise canceling headphones with absolutely perfect sound clarity, then these might not be the headphones for you. If, however, you’re looking for an affordable alternative that gives god quality sound with very good noise cancellation, then the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7B QuietPoint Headphones may just be the ones for you.
