An Overview of Wireless Headphones

All wireless headphones are the same, right? Actually, there are many varieties of wireless technology. There are also a number of different shapes and styles. Understanding your options will help you choose the right headphones for your needs. Wireless Headphone Technology There are three main types of wireless technology. Understanding the limitations and advantages of each technology will help you compare headphones. Bluetooth – Bluetooth technology is well known. It’s commonly used for cell phones. Bluetooth uses radio frequencies to connect your headphones with your device. The advantage is that the sound quality is usually exceptional. The downside is that it has a shorter range than other technologies. Additionally, Bluetooth uses a system that changes radio frequencies about 1,600 times every second. This means that you’ll rarely experience any outside interference. More wireless devices can make use of the same limited radio frequency space. Radio Frequency Headphones – Radio frequency headphones are considered to be the best quality wireless headphones. They provide a wide listening range and high quality sound. They’re also generally the most affordable type of headphones. Many of the top of the line headphones use radio frequency technology. The downside is that many wireless headphones using radio frequency technology can be quite heavy. This is due to the battery requirements. There is also the potential for interference. They’re great for around the house use. Infrared Headphones Infrared technology is the third option. However, because this technology requires a direct line to the device, you have limited range. Infrared headphones are usually the least expensive option. Additionally, you don’t have to worry about radio interference or static with this type of wireless headphone technology. It is the least popular option which means that you may have trouble finding the right headphones for your needs. Wireless Headphone Style Choices Once you’ve determined which technology you’d prefer it’s time to look at the style of headphones you’d prefer. There are a few standard options. Over the ear headphones – These headphones, while a bit large and bulky, also tend to have the best sound. They completely cover your ear and are placed on top of your head like a headband. Many people find this style the most comfortable option despite their size. Behind the neck headphones – These headphones sit over your ears. They’re smaller in scale and less bulky. The sound quality isn’t as good because they allow outside noise into your ear. They are comfortable because they’re light. However, you may have trouble keeping them on your ears. Behind the neck headphones also come in ear bud style. This style can provide a bit better sound quality when they fit tightly into your ear canal and keep sound out. Ear buds – Ear buds are two small speakers connected to each other by a thin cord. Many people prefer ear buds because of their size. You can tuck them into a pocket when you’re not using them. You can also find ear buds that hook over your ear to stay on. Again, these are usually connected to each other with a small cord. Choosing Your Wireless Headphones Making the headphone decision is easy. Decide which technology best fits your needs. Find a pair that is comfortable and fits your budget and you’re good to go. Always read reviews about the headphones before you buy. Look for wireless headphones with good sound quality, a reputation for durability, and comfort.
